On Friday November 26, 2007 at 15:44 hrs., units were dispatched for an unresponsive gentleman who was receiving dialysis treatment. Captain Judd was in the area and responded to units on his arrival that the patient was pending code and immediately began life saving measures. Crews arrived, began advanced life support and found the patient to be in a life threatening cardiac rhythm. Under direction of senior paramedic Richard Hart, paramedic in training Jennifer Provost delivered several synchronized cardio version shocks which soon converted the heart rhythm. Captain Judd, Firefighters Cudgma, Rebmann and Ghiroli performed advanced airway management and prepared for transport. The patient soon gained consciousness and was answering questions. He was then transported to the hospital where he received further treatment.

Once again the advanced level of medical training and our personnel’s constant state of readiness was the difference in the outcome of this call. Performing flawlessly, they all proved once again why the Branford Fire Department is considered a leader in the region.

The crew responding to the I-95 code save was Medic 1 Firefighter/EMT Justin Infantino and Firefighter/Paramedic Joseph Maull. As the officer of Engine 1, I was joined by Firefighter Joseph Laudicina. The call took place on I-95 eastbound in the McDonald’s parking lot and involved a the driver of a tractor trailer having difficulty breathing. M2 and E1 were dispatched along with Automatic Mutual Aid from East Haven, who sent their rescue unit. Upon M2 and East Haven rescue arriving at the truck, the patient was in distress and was rapidly removed from the truck, placed on the stretcher were upon he immediately coded. E1 arrived and were called to M2 to assist the crews already performing CPR and ALS. From my observation, the scene was very smooth, non-chaotic due to FF/Paramedic Maull who had established his lines, was administering medication along with electro-shocks from the defibulator. Twice he had converted the patient back into a workable rhythm and the on-scene time was minimal. This action, along with BLS/ALS care gave the patient very good odds and a favorable outcome. Firefighters Infantino and Laudicina assisted along with the crew members from East Haven FD providing CPR and rescue breathing as well as assisting in establishing IV access.

It gives me great pleasure to recommend to the Chief’s Office a CPR save for FF/Paramedic Maull, FF/EMT Infantino, FF/Paramedic Laudicina and the crew from the EH rescue unit.
