Mill Plain road structure fire 1/2014
Updated On: Jan 13, 2014

Press release from the Chief's office.

The Branford Fire Department responded to 109 Mill Plain Rd. this afternoon at 4:48pm.

Upon arrival there was heavy fire visible from the second floor of two story “Colonial” style home.

The occupants had escaped the fire unharmed.

Fire crews from Engine-1 entered the structure and found heavy fire conditions on the second floor. The fire was venting from two windows in the rear of the structure.

Crews quickly extinguished the main body of fire and extensive overhaul operations ensued. The fire was contained and under control within 20 minutes.

Additional units on scene and assisting were Engine-2, Engine-5, Truck-1, and Medic-1. The Guilford Fire Department was called to assist with” Rapid Intervention” in the event of a firefighter in trouble, a standard practice for both Towns.

The Fire Marshal’s Office and the Branford Police Department are on scene and investigating the cause of this fire. At this time the cause is undetermined.

Due to the fire, water, and smoke damage the house is uninhabitable and the homeowner is taking steps to secure the residence.

Chief Ahern noted that “the crews did an excellent job finding the seat of the fire, extinguishing the flames, removing smoke, and minimizing additional damage”. “Our firefighters have been extremely busy over the past week and have had to work under very harsh conditions, this was just another example of a great job by all”.

The Fire Department also had to call Public Works to the scene as ice covered Mill Plain Rd.
